From BW summer camp to Broadway: Marcus Martin's magical journey

Before his voice had even changed, the young Akron native and music theatre grad got his first taste of BW's talent development at a Community Arts School camp.

The path Marcus Martin '20 took to Broadway is a story of determination, passion and personal growth that started on stage at a Baldwin Wallace University Community Arts School summer camp.

Later, as an undergraduate music theatre major graduating into the face of a global pandemic that challenged the theater industry, Martin refined his craft and stayed committed to his dreams.

Ultimately, the Akron, Ohio, native found success in the heart of New York City's iconic theater scene as the Genie standby in Disney's "Aladdin" on Broadway.

The Road to Broadway

After two years and over 500 performances as the Genie in the North American Tour of Disney's "Aladdin," Martin landed his dream job as the standby for the Genie on Broadway.

The role is iconic, bold and full of heart, and Martin brought his unique energy and talent to it. His time on the tour not only solidified his place in the theater world but also gave him invaluable experience that would shape his performance on Broadway.

The road from tour to Broadway was made even more meaningful by the recognition that his voice as an artist could be used for something bigger than himself.

"I'm so blessed that 'Aladdin' has given me a platform," Martin shared.

Community Impact and Advocacy

Martin's commitment to community impact is a central part of his journey.

"My mother taught me at a young age that a platform is pointless if you don't do anything with it. I've tried to take that mindset with me as I go through my career. Empowering the next generation of storytellers through arts education has become a huge passion of mine."

Through Arts Ignite, he has worked with young performers in New York, sharing his experience and insight about the industry while fostering a love for the arts. He also teaches audition masterclasses to students all over the country.

Time at BW

Martin's time at BW started long before he applied to the University's acclaimed music theatre program and even before his voice had changed! As a child, he attended BW Community Arts School summer camps in music theatre, where his talent was evident.

Later, BW's Music Theatre program was a transformative experience that shaped him into more than just an actor or singer; it turned him into a true storyteller. The program not only refined his craft but also taught him the professional skills necessary to thrive in the competitive world of show business.

Through his education, Martin learned how to navigate the business side of "show business" and to flourish beyond music theatre.

"The more of a human you are, the better artist you become," he reflects. "My favorite campus memories include spring break trips with the Voices of Praise Gospel Choir and participating in voter registration drives."

"During those four years, I grew in my artistry AND my humanity. I learned how important it is to set boundaries. I learned how to be a leader. I learned how to advocate for myself. I became more disciplined, and I made PLENTY of mistakes along the way. I'm thankful for it all."

Looking Ahead

Today, Martin continues to shine in "Aladdin" and found time to do a small recurring role on Season 3 of "Power Book II: Ghost" on Starz, but he remains committed to using his platform for good.

Whether he's performing on Broadway, teaching audition masterclasses or inspiring young artists, his mission remains the same: to empower others through the arts and storytelling.

Martin is dedicated to ensuring that the next generation of talented performers has the tools they need to succeed, just like the talented kid from Akron that came to a BW summer camp all those years ago.
