With a degree in political science and international studies from BW, Patrick Mahoney '14 never imagined he would find himself in a successful and fulfilling career in the medical field. A clinical research regulatory specialist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Mahoney has now been recognized as a 2019 Crain's Cleveland Business Twenty in Their 20s honoree.
Mahoney's first job after graduation was with Steris, where he worked with medical devices and regulatory reporting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). From there, he has continued in the medical field, now working at University Hospitals (UH) helping physicians develop and obtain FDA approval for new drugs and devices in the premarket stage. He assists physicians, who may not know the regulatory framework, with figuring out the best way to move forward.
"It's really interesting because you get to see tomorrow's medicine today. I'm a big, firm believer that today's clinical research is tomorrow's bedside care," Mahoney shared in an article for Crain's.
"[Y]ou can see kind of the needle moving and science and innovation on the forefront of how to get these devices, these technologies, these biologics, these drugs approved with the FDA so it's really exciting work."
Beyond his work for UH, Mahoney is active in his community as a Cleveland Ward 3 - Precinct I committee chairperson, a city advocate for the Downtown Cleveland Alliance and a volunteer soccer coach.
Mahoney was also active in the campus community during his time at BW. He served in many leadership positions, including student body vice president his junior year and president his senior year, chaplain of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and a student ambassador.
Mahoney is now being recognized for his great work both for UH and his community as one of the 2019 Twenty in Their 20s honorees through Crain's Cleveland Business.
This honor recognizes driven young professionals working in Cleveland each year. The honorees have had a strong, positive impact on both their businesses and communities and represent the bright future of business leadership in Cleveland. This is the second year in a row that a BW grad has been among the Twenty in Their 20s honorees.
