Contemporary Media Emphasis

Overview

The contemporary media emphasis is designed to develop skills across the areas of recording, producing and distribution. Throughout the emphasis program, students will complete individual recording/producing projects which are required in many of the included courses. These media projects, when compiled into portfolios, will provide a robust professional artifact.

Career Opportunities

The contemporary media emphasis provides supportive skills and content knowledge to facilitate successful careers in the fields of communications, music composition, music business and arts management.

Curriculum

The contemporary media emphasis consists of three required courses and 5-6 elective credits, which then satisfy the 12-13 credit requirement for this program.

Required Courses

  • CAS 172 Fundamentals of Media Production (3 credits)
  • CAS 274 Sound, Microphone Techniques, and Recording (2 credits)
  • CAS 374 Audio Editing, Mixing, and Distribution (2 credits)

Choose 2 credits of the following:

  • MUL 118 Songwriting (2 credits)
  • MUL 218 Jazz Improvisation (2 credits)
  • MUL 315 Electronic Music (2 credits)

Choose 3-4 credits of the following:

  • AMG 203 Music Industry I (3 credits)
  • MUC 320 Advanced Electronic and Computer Music (2 credits)
  • MUL 312 Music Copyright Law, Licensing, and Publishing (3 credits)
  • MUL 361 Music and Meaning in Film Music (3 credits)
  • MUL 362 Music and Meaning in Video Game Music (3 credits)
  • MUL 118 Songwriting (2 credits)*
  • MUL 218 Jazz Improvisation (2 credits)*
  • MUL 315 Electronic Music (2 credits)*

Award-winning WBWC 88.3 "The Sting" offers professional on-air radio experience as DJs, sports announcers, production assistants and recording engineers. Behind the scenes, you can help manage WBWC business operations.

BWTV is a student-directed program airing on local cable TV that builds important skills for broadcast television and video production.
