Commuters are a "Driving Force"
Although they may not call Baldwin Wallace home in terms of residency, commuter students are a vital part of BW.
And while commuters may have to make a few adjustments in order to take advantage of the many out-of-classroom opportunities available to them, they are an integral part of today's diverse student body. They are involved with sports, clubs/organizations, academic endeavors and more.
BW offers commuter amenities, including special events and a designated lounge where they can eat, rest, socialize and study.
The following suggestions pertain to commuters and their parents and family members, but they also can be applicable to most college students.
Tips for Success
If your student feels overwhelmed, offer support. After all, commuters are busy people who may be juggling family, work and college responsibilities.
Communication is essential. Although your student may be living at home, your student probably anticipates having more independence. Discussing house rules and family roles can eliminate potential tensions.
Your student may miss family events in lieu of participating in college activities. If so, it probably means your student is becoming fully engaged in campus life.
Be an anchor for your student. Balance the role with encouraging autonomy. Wanting to assist a busy college student comes naturally to most parents. Students who learn to manage increased workloads for college and home build important time management skills.
Encourage your student to get involved. BW offers academic-focused organizations, community service initiatives, athletics, intramural and recreational activities, and a variety of social and special interest groups. These activities provide opportunities for students to meet a variety of people, gain valuable leadership and communication skills, and build resume and networking contacts.
