About the CARES Act

The federal government recently announced the distribution of emergency cash grants to college students whose lives and education have been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. This funding is available through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

CARES Act Expense Categories

Baldwin Wallace University has received federal funding from the CARES Act, which provides assistance for undergraduate and graduate student expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus. Students can request funds in these categories:

Eligibility Requirements

Per the U.S. Department of Education, in order to be eligible for consideration of funding, the student must:

Have been enrolled at Baldwin Wallace University in the spring term as of March 13, 2020 as well as the fall term as of October 1, 2020.
Have not already received BW CARES Act Emergency Fund dollars distributed in June/July 2020.
Be Title IV aid eligible (i.e. 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 FAFSA application on file with BW to confirm eligibility). If you have not already completed the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 FAFSA, you can complete and file a FAFSA online.
Have experienced a financial hardship as a result of the disruption of education due to the coronavirus.

Funds will be determined based on the number of requests and your demonstrated financial need as evidenced by the FAFSA.

Please Note: International, non-US citizen, dual-credit, CCP non-degree-seeking students, students exclusively enrolled in online courses, or students who withdrew from classes prior to March 13, 2020 and/or October 1, 2020 are not eligible for CARES Act funding.

What is the Cares Act?: The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act is federal legislation that provides a variety of financial support to individuals and organizations affected by the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic.

The CARES Act includes a Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) that provides more than $14 billion in emergency funding to higher education. Of those funds, more than $6 billion must go directly to students in the form of emergency financial aid grants (HEERF-student share) for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Baldwin Wallace University will receive a total of $3.37M of which at least half ($1.685M) must be provided directly to students for their expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, healthcare, and childcare. The other half may be used by the university to cover costs associated with significant changes to the delivery of instruction due to the coronavirus.
How much will I receive and when?: Funds will be determined based on the number of requests and potentially by your demonstrated financial need as evidenced by the FAFSA. Please Note: International, non-US citizen, dual-credit, CCP non-degree-seeking students, students exclusively enrolled in online courses, or students who withdrew from classes prior to March 13, 2020 and/or October 1, 2020 are not eligible for CARES Act funding.

All emergency grants will be processed through student accounts in early November. Emergency grants will be directly deposited into bank accounts for students who are enrolled in direct deposit. Students without direct deposit will be mailed checks no later than the end of November.
Does this funding affect my other financial aid or account balance?: No. This is an emergency grant to help you manage unexpected expenses related to the coronavirus, and it will not have any impact on other financial aid you may be eligible to receive. In addition, you will not need to repay any money received through this fund. Any CARES Act funding awarded to you will be paid to you directly, and it will not cover any outstanding balances owed to Baldwin Wallace University. Any outstanding balance owed to BW will remain the responsibility of the student.
