About

The Academic and Cultural Events Series (ACES) Office provides the opportunity for an enriched learning environment for students, faculty, staff and the local community. ACES partners with academic departments and student organizations to bring intellectual and cultural services and programs to campus throughout the academic year.

ACES offerings include a broad range of speakers, field trips, performing arts, films and special programming that encompass diversity topics and international awareness of global issues. Past events include notable speakers such as Dr. James H. Cone, Cornel West, Mayor Cory Booker, Dick Vitale, Dick Gregory, Yolanda King, Morris Dees, Rev. Joseph Lowrey, Rev. Bernice King, Rev. James Lawson, Kevin Powell, Richard Rodriguez, Ben Stein, Anna Deavere Smith and more.

ACES is involved in the following:

  • Planning all aspects of academic and cultural performing arts events including contract negotiations, publicity/promotion and travel arrangements.
  • Coordinating an educational program series with the First-Year Experience program and Curriculum Committee as well as special core curricular supplemental programs.
  • Coordinating and/or assisting with Martin Luther King, Jr. Week, Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and other special programs.
  • Serving as the main sponsor of Enduring Questions: The Mark Collier Lecture Series.
  • Providing community relations by meeting regularly with community leaders and residents to promote, enhance and nourish support of upcoming programs as well as "town and gown" relationships.
  • Maintaining collaborative relationships with BW's Multicultural Student Services, Diversity Affairs, Voices of Praise (VOP) Gospel Choir, People of Color United (POCU) and its member organizations, UNIDOS, Student Life, Student Activities and the Black Forum.
  • Bringing artists from around the world to campus and having student volunteers host them.
  • Assisting faculty, staff, students and student organizations in developing and implementing programs, while maintaining a great programming resource with a wide variety of possible speakers and guest artists.
  • Providing diversity awareness and training presentations ranging from one hour to three days.
  • Providing opportunities for students to build their resumes by working first hand with diverse people and programming.
