Songwriting

Ages 15 and up; some musical knowledge helpful.
A class for amateur musicians, designed to lead participants through the fundamentals of songwriting: styles, melody, lyrics, and accompaniment. Basic melody notation, chord symbols and accompaniment options will be covered, as well as simple keyboarding of melodies, common chords and progressions. The course will also include an introduction to computer notation software (Finale). This combination course of lecture, discussion, and lab work will culminate in at least one professionally notated song that can be shared with friends, family, church congregations, etc. During the final class, students will present a finished song in to the class.
Ellen Hansen-Ellis has a B.M. in Composition from Baldwin Wallace University, and plays piano and flute. She is a church music director, and also works as an administrative staff member at the BW Conservatory of Music. She has composed extensively for voice, both solo and choral works, as well as for piano and other instruments.
