What is your favorite quote?
ʺHappiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.ʺ
What was your biggest mistake as a first year student? What did you learn from that experience?
The hardest thing for me was time management of my studies. It wasn't necessarily that I wasn't doing my assignments, the problem was that I was always waiting until the last minute and staying up to unreasonable hours of the morning to finish them. Don't put this on yourself, trust me. The best thing you can do for yourself when you first get to school is to work towards eliminating procrastination in your life. It's something that I still struggle with to this day, but once I started making a conscious effort I saw immediate improvement in my grades and my stress level.
How did you choose your major?
I came to BW as a Music Education Major because I've always had a passion for playing music and expressing myself through that playing. However after my first semester of my sophomore year I made the decision to alter my path and go into the field of Psychology. I was heavily influenced by my work done in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program here which made me realize that I gain so much joy from working one on one with children. But I didn't want to give up music completely so I kept it as a minor and I still play in the Concert Wind Ensemble to keep my love for music alive.
What has been your best experience at BW so far?
The process of going through fraternity recruitment during the first semester of my freshman year was one of the most enlightening and humbling experiences that I've been through. I did my best to experience everything that all the organizations here on campus had to offer and in the process I made so many friends from all parts of campus that I still hold contact with to this day. Having to choose just one organization to join was a difficult decision, but it made me so happy to realize that I could still keep those friends in other organizations and that we'd be working together for the rest of my college career.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
There is one spot on campus that doesn't receive enough recognition for the excellence that it contains. That spot is the smoothie bar in the Lou Higgins Recreation Center. They have extremely comfortable seating with a TV to keep yourself updated on today's professional sports, and the best tasting smoothies that I've ever had. And they are somewhat healthy for you too! I highly recommend stopping by whenever possible, whether you need a post workout refreshment or just want a tasty snack on the way to your next class.
What movie star would play the role of you in a movie? Why?
I would probably be a sarcastic partner in some kind of godfather-esque movie taking place in the bronx in the 1920's. And yes, it is partially because I'm Italian. Although I would probably not be the most physical person in the movie, I believe I would provide some comic relief to the potentially stressful situations that would arise.
What was the best advice given to you by your parents or family members during your first year?
Whenever I told my parents about something that I wanted to do or join at BW, they always gave me the same response, ʺIf it's something you want to do, go ahead.ʺ This short phrase is so simple in reality, yet looking back on it now it's extremely empowering. It made me realize that I was taking steps toward my own life and I had control over how I molded it. I could join any organization I want, and I could spend my days doing whatever I want as long as I kept my grades in good standing and kept a positive relationship with my friends and co-workers.
If you have an interest in something, don't hesitate to pursue it. You never want to look back on your life and wonder what it would've been like if you had chased that dream or that idea that you had in college. If you think it will make you happy, it can't hurt to try.
