Alternative Winter Break 2011 - New Orleans, LA
The 2011 Alternative Winter Break trip traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana focusing their service on the theme “A Tribute to Service in the Bayou.” The group worked with the Saint Barnard Project where they help with rebuilding homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. They put in new insulation, scrubbed wood studs, rafters, and support beams. The group also worked with Project Lazarus, a home for people living with HIV/AIDS. They helped with landscaping projects including putting down mulch and weeding. They also helped the staff set up for a Christmas party by cleaning the house. They were invited back a second day and had the opportunity to meet and hang out with the residents. A third site was the Covenant House, a teen crisis center. The group helped sort clothing donations, scrubbed the stairs but also had the opportunity to have dinner and hang out with the teens in the program. Housing was provided by the St. Jude Community Center.
