Spring 2005 Day Course Schedule - English

As part of the core curriculum, all students are required to complete English 111, College Composition, and English 131, Workshop in Exposition and Argument, preferably in their first two semesters at Baldwin Wallace University. Some students will have already completed the equivalent of English 111 or will be exempted from the requirement to take English 111. Students not required to take English 111 shouldstrive to take English 131 in the first semester of their enrollment but no later than the second semester. Students who are required to take English 111 should strive to take English 111 in the first semester of enrollment but not later than the second semester. They should take English 131 no later than the third semester of enrollment.

Students who have fulfilled English 111 through receiving academic credit for transferred courses or PSEO or CLEP or IB or AP:English Composition may not enroll in English 111 for credit. Students who have been placed directly in English 131 by ACT or SAT results or through the "Challenge Option" receive no academic credit for English 111 but may elect to enroll in English 111 prior to taking English 131.

Students who have exempted both English 111 and 131 by ACT or SAT results or through the "Challenge Option" receive no academic credit for English 111 or English 131 but may elect to enroll in English 111 and/or English 131.

Challenge Option: Students who believe that they have been placed too low may challenge their placement by writing an essay under supervised conditions at designated times on registration days or during their first semester at Baldwin Wallace University.

eighteenth-century novels in order to consider the cultural anxieties that circulate around the popularization of prose fiction in the eighteenth century. We will pay particular attention to how sexuality becomes one of the focal concerns of writers and critics of novels. Possible texts that will be the basis of our study include works by Daniel Defoe, Eliza Heywood, Henry Fielding, Charlotte Lennox, Horace Walpole, and Ann Radcliffe.

Preq: 6 hours of literature at 100 or 200 level. James, Wharton, and Cather represent the pinnacle of American literary art as the nineteenth century becomes the twentieth. Masters of the craft of fiction, their work inspired the next generation, including Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner. Rich in humanity and language, James, Wharton, and Cather still provide aesthetic pleasure for readers and offer models to aspiring writers. Topics will include the artist’s quest, literary experimentation, changing gender roles, the effects of WWI, and the struggle for affirmation in a rapidly changing world.

We’ll explore current American poetry by traveling the exotic landscape of contemporary poetics, challenging ongoing debates about the nature of poetry, and experiencing the works of six American poets in depth—books that range from the riveting and rowdy to the spiritual and surreal.

We will survey theories of literature from Plato to the postmodern and examine questions such as what is literature, how is literary meaning determined, what is the relation of literature to truth and to knowledge, what is the relation of the author and of the reader to the literary text, and what is the relation between theory and practice.

ENG-463I-S01 Acting Shakespeare 4 2:40PM-3:55PM MWF BECH 21 S. Oldrieve
Preq: 6 hours of literature at 100 or 200 level or permission of instructor. A study of Shakespeare’s As You Like It through discussion, writing and performance. Students will produce an informal but complete production at the end of the semester. Extra rehearsals may be scheduled for up to 3 Saturdays. Students will also have the opportunity to travel to Staunton, Virginia to see the Shakespeare Shenandoah Express perform in their replica of the Blackfriars theater, and to Stratford, Ontario for the Shakespeare Festival. Trips are not required but can be used for alternate writing assignments.
