Involved deeply in the political and cultural events of their time, these two writers express complex views about Queen Elizabeth and Elizabethan history and develop timeless themes about love, power, religion, and art. A major influence on Shakespeare, Sidney and Spenser provided the literary foundation of the Elizabethan Renaissance and continued to have significant impact on the work of both British and American writers through the early 20th century. Optional experiential learning activities will be available to students in this class, including a trip to London over Spring break.

Writers of creative nonfiction give us the candle and the mirror, blurring the fact with fiction and the objective with the personal. We will take an excursion with masters of this art as they discover reality through innovative forms: memoir, nature writing, the personal essay, creative travel writing,
literary journalism, and experimental collage.
