"Business Innovation Factory" Founder to Appear at Baldwin Wallace University

Saul Kaplan Calls for New Business Models to Deliver Future Economic Success

Business innovation guru Saul Kaplan, who believes that rapid changes in the global economy make business model innovation "the new strategic imperative," will appear at Baldwin Wallace University on Thursday, November 17. Kaplan, founder of the Business Innovation Factory and former Rhode Island's Economic Development chief, will talk on "Business Model Innovation for Private & Public Sectors" at 4 p.m. at BW's Center for Innovation & Growth, 340 Front Street in Berea.

Blurring Sector LInes Demands New Hybrid Models
Kaplan urges all organizations - public and private, for-profit and non-profit - to "get comfortable with more experimentation and ambiguity" as traditional lines blur. "We need new hybrid models that don't fit cleanly into today's convenient sector buckets," he says. "We already see for-profit social enterprises, non-profits with for-profit divisions, and for-profit companies with social missions."

Kaplan scoffs at institutions that believe the rules of business do not apply to them. "The idea that business models are just for business is just wrong. Any organization that wants to be relevant, to deliver value at scale, and to sustain itself must clearly articulate and evolve its business model," Kaplan says. "If an organization doesn't have a sustainable business model, its days are numbered."

BW Business Division Cultivates Spirit of Innovation in NE Ohio
According to BW Division of Business chair Linda Bluso, Kaplan's appearance "is just one of the ways the Division of Business and our Center for Innovation and Growth are committed to cultivating the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship both on campus and in the broader business community."

The talk, part of BW's Kamm Lecture Series, is free and open to the public but seating is limited and advance registration is required by Monday, November 14.
