*Baldwin Wallace University has applied for Provisional Accreditation from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Provisional accreditation is an accreditation status for a new PA program that has not yet enrolled students, but at the time of its comprehensive accreditation review, has demonstrated its preparedness to initiate a program in accordance with the accreditation Standards.
BW anticipates the start of its first class in May 2013.
BW Launches Nursing, Physician Assistant Programs
The programs integrate classroom rigor and comprehensive clinical rotations with BW’s liberal arts-focused approach to learning. Upon graduation, nursing and physician assistant graduates will be adept practitioners as well as leaders prepared for today’s complex healthcare system.
First Nursing Class: Enthusiastic and Engaged
In August, BW welcomed 29 students to its accelerated bachelor of science nursing program. Upon announcement, the program received an overwhelming response of applicants attracted to its 12-month completion and innovative concept-based curriculum.
The students, diverse in career background, age and ethnicity, have quickly and enthusiastically integrated into the program. Ranging in age from 22-63, they are career-changers whose backgrounds include teaching, engineering, bio-statistics and more.
“They have a real camaraderie and engagement with the program,” noted June Romeo, Ph.D., Chair of Health and Physical Education. “Upon graduation, they will be strong leaders and contributors to the nursing profession."
She went on to say "the nursing program is a strong outgrowth of BW's liberal arts history." Romeo, whose leadership has been instrumental to the nursing and PA programs, believes the concept-based pedagogy is a natural fit.
Physician Assistant: One of Fastest Growing Health Careers
In May 2013, Baldwin Wallace is introducing a 24-month physician assistant program leading to a Master of Medical Science degree.*
The program addresses the growing need for certified physician assistants. Forbes.com rates physician assistant #1 on its list of "best master’s degrees for jobs." CNNMoney.com ranks physician assistant as its #2 choice for a healthcare career in its "Best Jobs in America" list.
BW’s PA program will offer rigorous coursework and comprehensive clinical rotations. Upon completion, participants earn a MMS degree and are prepared to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE).
There are currently 164 accredited PA programs in the United States, of which only seven are in Ohio. The mean salary for practicing PAs in Ohio is $86,766.
