The BW Wrestling Team Finishes Sixth and Has Two Champions at the 20th
Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in Berea
BEREA, OHIO—The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished sixth of nine schools at the 20th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament today (Feb. 4) in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse in Berea, Ohio.
The Yellow Jackets totalled 66.5 points and two individual champions. Brockport State (N.Y.) College won its 10th straight Summa title with 138.5 points.
Individually for BW, seniors Sterling Sebek (Columbus, Georgia/ Brookstone), at 174 pounds, and Devin Carman (Ashtabula/ Geneva) each won individual titles. For Carman, it was his second straight Summa title. Sebek won an individual crown in 2004 and also was selected as the Summa Tournament Most Valuable Wrestler that year.
At 174 pounds, Sebek had a 3-0 record as he beat Tyree Johnson of Mt. Union College by technical fall in the first round, 18-1 (5:00), then defeated Tyler Allen of Waynesburg (Pa.) College by a major decision at 16-7 in the semifinals and beat Brandon Council of Thiel (Pa.) College in the championship match, 5-4. With his three wins, Sebek improved to 22-6 this season.
Carman, a returning NCAA Division III All-American at 197 pounds, had a pair of byes before defeating Jerod Agler of Tri State (Ind.) University with a Summa Tournament Fastest Pin Award of 25 seconds in the semifinals and then beating Zach Greenberg of Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology 4-3 in the championship match. Carman, who missed the first two-thirds of the season due to an injury, is now 4-0.
In addition to Sebek and Carman, freshman 133-pounder Brian Bucher (Toledo) finished third, sophomore Scott Haber (Parma/ Normandy) was sixth at 141 pounds and freshman Antonio Campea (Hinckley/ Parma Padua) was fourth at 165 pounds.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 7 when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to compete in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual match against 13th-ranked Heidelberg College at the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
