Yellow Jackets Sweep Spalding with 8-0 Shutout and 6-5 Win at Maryville (Tenn.) College Classic
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept two games from Spalding (Ky.) University today (Sunday, March 22, 2009), 8-0 in the first game and a 6-5, eighth inning win in the second game on the second and final day of the Maryville (Tenn.) College Classic. The Yellow Jackets finished action in Maryville with a 3-1 record.The game-one win against Spalding was BW’s second straight shutout and a game-two win ran BW’s winning streak to three games.
The sweep improves the Yellow Jackets to 10-4 overall, while Spalding falls to 3-9.
In the first game, BW scored two runs in each of the bottom of the first and third innings, added another run in the fifth and tacked on three more insurance runs in the sixth. Senior first baseman and reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Senior) led the way at the plate with a three-for-four performance, including a homerun, two doubles, four runs batted-in and two runs scored. Sophomore catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) tallied three of her six hits of the day and scored twice. Sophomore shortstop Katrinia Resek (Strongsville) was three-for-three with a walk and a run batted-in.
On the mound, freshman pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) started and threw a complete-game one-hitter and struck out two batters to improve to 5-2.
In the second game, Spalding jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second and one in the third. The Yellow Jackets began their comeback in the top of the fourth inning with three runs. A single run from the Jackets tied the game in the top of the seventh and the Golden Eagles were unable to score in the bottom half of the frame to force extra innings. BW scored two in the top of the eighth and held Spalding to one run in the bottom half of the inning to complete the comeback.
Offensively for the Brown & Gold, Davis had three more hits in five tries, including a double and an RBI. Junior outfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/ Highland) also had a three-for-five game. Junior outfielders Monica Brasee (Wellington) and Mallory Kobak (Independence) tallied two hits, and junior second baseman Lauren Sabolik (Strongsville) provided spark with a three-run homer.
On the hill, sophomore southpaw Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) started and went the distance and gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out four batters, while walking only one. Her record now stands at 4-2.
Over the four-game weekend, Saunders went eight-for-12 at the plate and Davis went eight-for-13 with two RBI and two extra-base hits. Baker logged 14 innings pitched without giving up a run, allowed just four hits and struck out five, as she recorded two complete-game shutouts. Rohrbacher worked 15 innings and fanned nine batters.
The Yellow Jackets will return to Berea to host Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday, March 24, in a non-conference twinbill at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds at 3:30 p.m. BW will also play host to three doubleheaders over a nine-day span as it will face Ohio Athletic Conference foes Heidelberg University on April 1 and Ohio Northern University on April 7, and host traditional rival Case Western Reserve University on April 9. All start times are 3:30 p.m.
