Baldwin Wallace University Men Open Season With 2-0 Win Versus Adrian
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team opened the 2006 season today (September 1) as the Yellow Jackets defeated Adrian (Mich.) College, 2-0, in the first round of the Tri-State University Tournament in Angola, Indiana.
With its win, the BW men are 1-0 and will play the host school tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in the second game of the round robin tournament.
BW dominated the game from start to finish and outscored Adrian, 31-3, and outcornered its season-opening opponent, 15-1, including 10-0 in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the first half at the 7:26 mark when senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference defender Jon Stanton (Delaware/ Hayes) scored off a double assist from junior forward Brian Sugerman (Akron/ Richfield Revere) and junior All-OAC forward Matt Pietro (Canfield), who began the play with a corner kick. The score remained 1-0 in favor of BW at halftime.
The Jackets' increased their advantage to 2-0 in the second stanza, at the 75:50 mark, when junior Rob Young (Cuyahoga Falls/ Stow) scored with Sugerman earning his second assist of the afternoon.
In goal, sophomore keeper Alex Stavros (Fairlawn/ Copley) played a solid game and earned his first career shutout as he faced three Adrian shots and made a save.
Following its game tomorrow versus host Tri-State, the BW men are idle until Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9 when they travel to Anderson, Indiana to participate in the Anderson University Tournament. BW plays host Anderson on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and then play Adrian for the second straight week in its Saturday game at 1:00 p.m.
