The 7th-Ranked Baldwin Wallace University Men’s Basketball Team Beats
Heidelberg, 108-93, to Remain in First Place in the OAC
BEREA, OHIO — Junior preseason All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 31 points as the seventh-ranked Baldwin Wallace University men’s basketball team won its seventh straight game as it defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 108-93, tonight (February 1) in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The win also gave BW a 59-37 all-time series advantage against the Student Princes.
With their win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 18-2 overall and remain in first place in the OAC with a 12-1 slate. BW leads the OAC by a full two games. In addition, the seven straight victores ties a season-high. With its loss, Heidelberg dropped to 7-13 overall and 3-10 in the OAC.
In the first half, BW jumped out to an early 16-7 lead after senior Dan Gundert scored on a lay up with 16:22 left in the half. Heidelberg countered with a 14-5 run to tie the score at 21-21. BW then took control of the game building a lead of 12 points on three separet occasions, the final one coming on a Davis jumper with 41.5 seconds remaining in the half making the score 55-43. The Yellow Jackets would take a 55-45 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Heidelberg would tie the game at 69-69 on a three-pointer by senior Scott Morrison with 12:44 remaining. BW answered with a 28-13 run to build their biggest lead of 15 points at 97-82 with 2:46 left in the game following sophomore guard Tyler Sekerak's (Corry, Pa./ Corry) sixth three-pointer of the game. The Jackets made their free-throws down the stretch and pulled out a 108-93 victory.
In addition to Davis for BW, Sekerak scored a career-high 19 points on six-of-eight from behind the three-point arc. Senior Dan Gundert (Wellington) scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out six assists while fellow senior Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) added 17 points. Sophomore point guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) added eight points and a career-high 12 assists.
Heidelberg was led by freshman Chad Szalay with 27 points. Joining him in double-figures was sophomores Shawn Shriver with 21 points, Greg Tyson with 17 points, Mitchell Goldschmidt with 11, and Brian Schmidt added 10 points.
BW will next be in action on Saturday, February 4 when it hosts OAC rival Otterbein College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 3:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES -- The nationally eighth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its seventh straight game and 14th in their last 15 contests when it travels to Tiffin, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College at the Seiberling Gymnasium.
This game pits the mentor, BW Head Coach Steve Bankson, against former Yellow Jacket player, Academic All-OAC player, 1993 BW graduate and current Student Prince Head Coach Duane Sheldon. So far, Bankson has beaten his pupil in five of the seven meetings and is 3-0 versus Sheldon in Tiffin.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 17-2 overall and is an OAC leading 11-1 following their 93-66 victory against Marietta College on Saturday (Jan. 28) in Marietta. The Yellow Jackets own a two-game advantage in the OAC race with six games to go in the regular season.
The Student Princes enter this game with a 7-12 overall and 3-9 OAC record following its 92-77 loss to second place Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Jan. 28) in Tiffin. Heidelberg has lost two straight games and six of its last seven contests overall.

Heidelberg Probable Starters and Information -- The Student Princes of Heidelberg College score 81.7 points per game and give up 81.1 for a plus 0.6 scoring differential. The Student Princes shoot 49.2 percent from the floor, 38.7 percent from three-point range and 64.9 percent from the foul line. Heidelberg grabs 36.8 rebounds per game for a plus 2.2 caroms per contest.
Look for Head Coach Duane Sheldon to play up to 10 players, while all five starters are sophomores. In the backcourt, 6'0" guard Shawn Shriver and 6'2" guard Matt Eberle will start while 6'5" Greg Tyson will get the call at the wing. Joining them in the frontcourt will be 6'5" small forward Andrew Lemmon and 6'6" post Brian Schmidt. Shriver tops the team in scoring averaging 13.7 ppg, while connecting on 44-of-114 three-pointers, good for 38.6 percent. Tyson is third on the team in scoring averaging 11.5 ppg,and is grabbing 3.6 caroms per contest. Schmidt averages 10.7 ppg,and is second on the team in rebounding with 5.1 rpg. Lemmon scores 10.2 ppg, and is second on the team with 12 blocked shots. Eberle rounds out the starting five, averaging 3.8 points per game and is third on the team with 42 assists.
Off the bench, look for Sheldon to play junior 6'9" post Ron Higgins, 6'0" freshman guard Chad Szalay, and 6'3" senior wing Scott Morrison. Higgins is second on the team in scoring with 11.7 ppg, and is leading the team in rebounding, bringing down 7.2 per game. Szalay averages 8.0 ppg, and shoots a team-leading 81.8 percent from the foul line. Morrison adds 4.0 ppg.
In BW's Last Game: BW--102, Marietta--53 on Saturday, January 28, 2006 in the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta, Ohio -- In its last game, BW completed the regular season sweep of OAC rival Marietta College with a 102-53 victory in Marietta. Junior two-time All-OAC forward Tori Davis led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points and 10 rebounds. In addition to Davis for BW, sophomore guard Tyler Sekerak scored a career-high 16 points and canned four three-pointers, junior foward Chad Clark had 12 points and sophomore guard Brendan Schuler and junior guard Nick Meyer each scored 11. Keys to the Yellow Jacket win included shooting 52.2 percent from the floor (35-of-67) and 84.2 percent from the foul line (16-of-19), passing for 24 assists in 35 made field goals and outrebounding the Pioneers, 50-34.
In Heidelberg's Last Game: Ohio Northern--92, Heidelberg -- 77 on Saturday, January 28 in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio -- In its last game, Heidelberg was defeated by the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University 92-77, at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. Despite the loss, four Student Prince players scored in double figures, led junior forward Ron Higgins with 16 points. In addition to Higgins, sophomore guard Greg Tyson scored 12 points, sophomore center Brian Schmidt had 11 and sophomore guard Matt Eberle had 10. Keys to the loss for the Student Princes were allowing ONU to make 56.5 percent of its field goals (35-of-62) compared to Heidelberg making just 43.9 percent of its field goal chances (25-of-57).

The Ohio Athletic Conference Race -- With three weeks and six games to go, BW has a two-game lead in the Ohio Athletic Conference Standings with its 11-1 mark. Ohio Northern is second at 9-3 and Muskingum College is third at 8-3 due to its game last Saturday being postponed due to the death of John Carroll University Head Coach Mike Moran's mother. A key OAC game is on Wednesday in Ada. BW travels to New Concord to play Muskingum on Saturday, Feb. 11 and hosts ONU in Berea on Feb. 15.
Tori Davis is Climbing Toward the All-Time Top-10 in Scoring at BW -- Junior two-time All-OAC player and 2005-2006 pre-season Division III All-American forward Tori Davis is nearing the Top-10 all-time leading scorers at BW. Davis has 1,365 career points and ranks 13th all-time. Next up on the list is Wynn Hawkins (1955-57) with 1,392 points. Tori Davis also has 621 career rebounds to rank eighth all-time and 155 blocked shots to rank second.
Keith Aufmuth is Climbing Toward 1,000 Career Points -- Senior All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth enters this game with 970 career points and needs 30 more to become the 34th player in school history to join the 1,000-Point Club.
Steve Bankson is BW's Winningest Men's Basketball Coach -- Yellow Jackets veteren Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest men's basketball coach in BW's school history with 382 wins in 26 years. He has 663 victories in his 42-year career. Bankson is 382-301 at BW, was 232-90 at Lorain County Community College and 49-24 in three seasons at the high school level. Bankson is also serving as BW's Men's Director of Athletics.
