The Baldwin Wallace University Men Defeat Capital, 72-55, in Bexley to Improve to 7-2 Overall

BEREA, OHIO - Senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds today (December 18, 2004) as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 72-55, in Bexley at the Capital Center.

With its victory, BW improved to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the OAC and won its second straight game. With its loss, Capital fell to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the OAC and snapped a four-game winning streak.

In the first half, BW led by as many as 14 points at 28-14 when sophomore guard Matt Marks (Boardman) made a foul shot to complete a three-point play with 8:34 left before halftime. BW also led at the intermission, 41-33.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to as many as 17 points with the final margin. Capital was as close as three points at 41-38 with 17:48 remaining when David Kalb canned a three-pointer.

In addition to Thad Davis for BW, sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) had 13 points, sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor) had 11 and junior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) had 10. With his 20 points and 15 rebounds today, now has 1,527 career points and 775 career rebounds. Today, he surpassed Harvey Hopson's (1965-68) 1,509 points and moved into eighth on the all-time scoring list. He is seventh in rebounding.

Capital was led by senior forward Jake Beck's 18 points.

The BW men will be back in action on Wednesday, December 29 when they travel to Hampden-Sydney, Virginia and will play Hood (Md.) College in the first round of the HSC/ Weenie Miller Holiday Hoops Tournament. The Baldwin Wallace University YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Bexley, Ohio to play an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Saturday, December 18, 2004 against OAC-rival Capital University at the Capital Center at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will seek to win its second game in a row
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 5-2 overall and 1-2 OAC record following its 74-54 win against Ohio Northern University on Wednesday (Dec. 15) in Berea.  The victory snapped a two-game losing streak.
        Capital enters this game with a 7-2 overall and 3-0 OAC record following its 70-62 victory against Mount Union College on December 11, 2004 in Bexley.  The Crusaders have won four straight games, including OAC victories against Muskingum College (70-59), Marietta College (127-100) and Mt. Union.

The Baldwin Wallace Versus Capital University Series--  This is the 79th all-time meeting between Baldwin Wallace University and Capital University in men’s basketball. The Crusaders lead the series between the two schools, 42-36, but BW has won the last two meetings. On February 14, 2004, BW won in Berea, 81-79. BW also beat Capital a year ago in Bexley, 67-63, on January 10, 2004.  The last Capital win occurred on February 15, 2003 when the Crusaders defeated the Yellow Jackets, 79-70, in Bexley.

The Division III National Poll --  Baldwin Wallace University is listed among the “Others Receiving Votes?nbsp; in this week’s Division III national poll by the D3hoops.com Internet Web site.  The Yellow Jackets were ranked 16th in the preseason poll, 13th in Week 2, 13th in Week 3 and 17th last week.

The Baldwin Wallace University Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'4"senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6'4"sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'4"sophomore swingman Matt Marks (Boardman) at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5'11"senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.8 points per game, grabs 13.4 rebounds per game and is canning 54.0 percent of his field goals (61-of-113). Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.6 ppg., second with 8.3 rpg., 15 blocked shots and seven steals, and is shooting 61.6 percent from the floor (53-of-86) and 70.0% from the foul line (35-of-50). Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 7.1 ppg., first with 52 assists, second with 10 three-pointers and has committed just 13 turnovers in 281 minutes of action.  Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 9.0 ppg., first with 12 treys and is second with 25 assists.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'4" senior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), 6'0" freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6'2" junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6'5" junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5'11" freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview).  Meyer is averaging 3.8 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 2.5 ppg. and is second with 11 steals. 

Capital Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Damon Goodwin to start 6'7" senior post Jake Beck and 6'7" freshman Jake Meisler at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5'10" sophomore David Johnson and at the guard positions will be 6'0" sophomore Bill Cullom and 6'2" senior David Kalb.  Beck leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 19.7 ppg. and 4.8 rpg.  Johnson is second in scoring with 11.8 ppg. and first on the team with 36 assists  and 16 three-pointers.  Kalb is the third leading scorer at 10.3 ppg.  and second in assists with 33. Off the bench look for Coach Goodwin to play 6'1" wing Brian Alge, 6'3" wing Eric Rosenbeck and 6'4" forward Mark Tinklenberg.  Alge has is averaging  2.8 ppg.  Rosenbeck is shooting 57.6 percent from the field and is averaging 4.7 ppg.  Tinklenberg is averaging 6.3 ppg. and has seven three pointers.           

THE LAST MEETING BETWEEN BW AND CAPITAL:   Baldwin Wallace-- 81, Capital --  79 in Berea, Ohio on February 14, 2004 -- The last time that the Yellow Jackets and Crusaders met, on February 14, in Berea, Baldwin Wallace defeated Capital, 81-79, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium. Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was current senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis with 24 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Also chipping in was current sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis with 15 points, current junior wing player Keith Aufmuth with 16 points and senior point guard Tom Harrington with 10 markers.  The Crusaders were led by current senior forward Jake Beck with 21 points. Graduated senior Adam Stolly added 16 points and graduated senior Tyler Alexander chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

In BW's Last Game, on December 15, 2004 versus Ohio Northern:  Baldwin Wallace -- 74, Ohio Northern 54, -- The Yellow Jackets won their sixth game of the year as they beat OAC rival Ohio Northern University, 74-54, on Wednesday, December 15, in Berea to improve to 1-2 ,in the OAC.  Senior forward Thad Davis led the Yellow Jackets with 30 points and 19 rebounds.  In addition, for the Yellow Jackets in double figures was junior guard  Keith Aufmuth had 17 points and sophomore forward Tori Davis chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.

In Capital’s Last Game:  Mount Union -- 62,  Capital--  70 on December 11 in Bexley -- The Crusaders defeated the Purple Raiders last Saturday in Bexley by the final score of 70-62.  The victory was the fourth straight for the Crusaders as they improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in OAC play.  Senior forward Jake Beck led the way with 18 points and five rebounds.  Sophomore guard David Johnson contributed 15 points and was three of  six on three point attempts.  Senior guard David Kalb led the Crusaders with six rebounds and finished in double figures with 12 points.  With 4:13 remaining in the game the score was tied at 59.  However, the Crusaders closed out the Purple Raiders with an 11-3 run to  secure the win.  The Purple Raiders had three players score in double figures.  Leading the way was Kyle Karpinski who had a game high 27 points.  The Purple Raiders turned the ball over 16 times and shot 41.7 % from the field. 


Yellow Jacket Chatter

Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters tonight’s game with Capital with 1,507 career points and 760 career rebounds and stands ninth on the all-time scoring list and seventh on the all-time rebounding list.  On Wednesday, Thad Davis surpassed Terry Allerton (1964-68), who had 1,499 career points.  He is just two points shy of tying te legendary Harvey Hopson (1965-69), who scored 1,509 career points.  Hopson, a retired officer in the military, currently works in BW Division of Business.

Bankson is the Winningest BW Basketball Coach --  With his 351 victories at Baldwin Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  He is 351-292 in 26 years at BW. Bankson has a career mark of 632-406 in 40 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasionbs at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 marks in three years at the high school level.
