BW Qualifies Five to 2012 NCAA Division III National Indoor Track Meet

BEREA, OHIO --  Five Baldwin Wallace University indoor track and field student-athletes, two men and three women, have qualified for the 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet this Friday and Saturday, March 9-10 at Grinnell (Iowa) College.  The top 13 men and top 15 women qualify in each event for the national meet. Highlighting the qualifiers is sophomore heptathlete Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights) who enters the national meet as the top scorer in the seven-event heptathlon with 5,065 points set at the University of Akron Multi-Event Meet. In addition, Eddy will compete individually in the pole vault. He is ranked 11th in that event with a best-vault of 16-feet.


In addition to Eddy, the men’s team will be represented by junior shot putter Zach Marinucci (Brunswick). He enters the meet ranked eighth in Division III and had a career-best throw of 54’8.25” yesterday at the University of Mount Union “Last Chance” Meet in Alliance.


The women’s team will be represented by shot putters in freshman Danielle Torrence (Canton/ South) and senior Leslie Purnell (Springfield/ Central Catholic) and junior weight thrower Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark). Torrence busted a career-best throw of 44’0.25” yesterday at Mt. Union and is ranked 12th and Pernell is ranked 13th with a best toss of 43’10”.  Perrine, who competed at the 2011 NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet last spring in the discus, is ranked 13th in the weight throw with a best toss of 55’9.75”.

This winter, the Yellow Jacket men’s and women’s indoor teams had an outstanding season. The women posted a 41-4 record and won three meet titles.  The men posted a 36-7 mark and also won three meet titles.


In addition to the five national indoor competitors participating next weekend, the rest of the men’s and women’s team is currently training in Jacksonville, Florida during the Annual Spring Break. The 2012 outdoor season opens next Friday and Saturday when BW participates in the annual Coastal Carolina Snowbird Invitational Meet in Conway, South Carolina.
