Kayaking the Weeki Wachee River

If you have been following my blog you would know that I am visiting my aunt and uncle in Florida for spring break. I flew into Tampa airport on Sunday night and we drove to my aunt and uncles home about two hours north. The next day we got up early and headed to the Weeki Wachee River and Hospital Hole. Hospital Hole is a big sinkhole in the middle of the Weeki Wachee river that my uncle enjoys scuba diving in. It is often filled with manatees and Monday was no exception. We probably saw about 20 manatees in the river and the hole. I even got to touch one because they came up right next to my kayak and were nuzzling it. For the record, it is ok to touch a manatee with one hand, but it is illegal if you put two hands on it because that is considered “riding the manatee.” Kind of funny, right?

The rest of the day was spent enjoying the Weeki Wachee River and kayaking past beautiful river houses and bungalos. I also got some sun with a little burn on my feet where I forgot to put sunscreen. OOPS!!!
