I had the amazing opportunity last Friday to see the Baldwin Wallace Opera for this season- The Turn of the Screw by Benjamin Britten. The show is about two children who are haunted by crazy pathologically evil ghosts. The children are taken care of by a governess and a housekeeper who are in constant fear of the children being taken over to the dark side. At the end of the show the children defy the ghosts but one of them die. It is kind of a bittersweet ending.
The singing was absolutely incredible, but who would expect anything less from students of the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory. There were two casts of each of the main characters. I saw the second cast, but I wish that I had also been able to see the first because one of the girls in my choir was in it. I wish I had been able to see her perform, but I’m sure she was just as good as the girl I saw who played her part the night I went.
The set and costumes of the opera were also beautiful. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to take flash photography of the opera while it was going on, so I had to settle for taking a crappy picture of the set before the opera started. I hope that all Baldwin Wallace students have the chance at least once to attend a Baldwin Wallace opera.
