Last Saturday October 27, Vicky Bussert, head of Musical Theatre hosted a Masterclass with the legendary composer, Sheldon Harnick. I was totally indifferent about sitting through a two hour class at 10am on a Saturday morning, but this experience played out to be absolutely inspiring and memorable. The class began with one of the MT seniors singing “Will He Like Me” from Sheldon’s 1963 musical, She Loves Me. Preceding her beautiful interpretation on the song, the tiny, white-haired, 88 year old Mr. Harnick stood in front of the engaged room to give his critiques. He stated some obvious corrections such as “You were overacting” or “not connected with the text” along with several deeper rooted comments having to do with why he wrote the lyrics he did. However, it was Mr. Harnick’s critiques that made him so genuinely loveable.
