12 Hour Reading Core
In Ohio, teachers seeking the Intervention Specialist license and the Reading endorsment must complete the Ohio-mandated 12 hour reading core. Early Childhood Education and Middle Childhood Education teachers should have completed this reading core with their initial license.
What is the Ohio Reading Core?
The Ohio reading core should include 12 credits of reading coursework, with at least one separate 3-semester hour course in the teaching of phonics. Other coursework must cover knowledge and beliefs about reading; individual differences; reading difficulties; creating a literate environment; word identification; vocabulary and spelling; comprehension; study strategies; writing; assessment; communicating information about reading; and curriculum development.
While the specific courses may differ depending upon the college or university attended, Baldwin Wallace University undergraduates take the following courses to meet the Ohio 12 hour reading core:
Early Childhood Licensure
EDU 204 Teaching of Phonics
EDU 332 Literacy Instruction in Early Childhood Education
EDU 333 Reading Instruction in Early Childhood Education
EDU 334 Diagnostic and Remedial Reading Methods
Middle Childhood Licensure
EDU 204 Teaching of Phonics
EDU 334 Diagnostic and Remedial Reading Methods
EDU 343 Reading Instruction in Middle Childhood Education
EDU 348 Reading in the Content Area
Enrollment Process for Teachers Who Need Ohio Reading Core Courses
The Education Division will review transcripts for all applicants applying for admission to the Mild/Moderate and Literacy programs to identify reading courses. If you are a teacher who needs to complete some or all of your reading hours, the Education Division will work with you to determine whether additional reading courses would be needed so that Ohio legislative code requirements for the Intervention Specialist license or Reading endorsement are met.
Teachers may begin the Intervention Specialist and Reading programs without having all 12 hours of the Ohio reading core, but must complete them before applying for the new license or endorsement.
