Missionary in Sengal
International Studies and French Major
Hometown: Wauseon, Ohio
What are you currently doing?
I am a missionary in Kedougou, Sengal, as part of the Fellowship of Evangelical Churches. I will be here for three years.
What out-of-classroom experiences enhanced your studies?
I was a member of the Model African Union and I had 2 internships. One internship was at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and at the other I worked with AmeriCorps through University Settlement.
Who was your BW faculty mentor?
Dr. Judy Krutky forever impacted my life. I could go to her with anything from questions about my course schedule to discussing materials I struggled with in class. She recognized my strengths and interests and encouraged me to do projects that tied into those areas. She also helped me develop skills where I had weaknesses. In my personal life, I would seek her advice with major life decisions. Now that I have graduated, I know her door is still open if I ever need guidance or just want to chat about life.
What makes BW's international studies program special?
It has wonderful teachers with years of real life and teaching experience. It also offers many opportunities to apply your studies outside of the classroom. I think the diversity of the studies is beneficial. To complete my major, I looked at the world through the “international studies” lens as well as philosophy, sociology, religion, language and political science.
