Chemistry Major

In Her Own Words...

The opportunities I got at BW were endless. I became active in the chemistry department by being a lab assistant, tutor, and partaking in the American Chemical Society (ACS) chapter on campus. Eventually, I grew into a leader for the ACS chapter; I was VP my junior year and President my senior year. In addition to the chemistry department, I was involved with Delta Zeta Sorority and Entrepreneurship Immersion Week and the Center for Innovation and Growth (CIG) Student Fellow Program. Not only was I active on campus, but I held two internships outside of campus. My first internship was at a small start-up company called Liquid Polymer. Here, I collaborated with a small team of professional chemists to develop a sustainable, revolutionary adhesive. My second internship was at Sherwin-Williams, where I was given a real-life project to solve and eventually present in a poster session.

With the combination of campus activities and the connections I made at my internships, I was able to land a chemist position at AkzoNobel early in the spring semester of my senior year. At AkzoNobel, I am one of three chemists developing a sustainable paper coating made from recycled plastic bottles. The product we’re developing is growing the company into a new market, and the product is completely different than anything in the market. I’m very excited to see where our product will take the company and where this experience will take me in my career.
