The Exemplary Teacher Award

Dr. Michael Melampy

Professor of Biology

Co-sponsored by The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church, the award recognizes a faculty member who exhibits excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to value-centered education and service to students, the institution and the community.

Active on campus and interested in issues of conservation and ecology, Dr. Melampy has mentored students, advised co-curricular groups and applied hands-on learning to his coursework at BW for nearly 30 years. Off campus, he has led the University's Seminar in Ecuador trip four times.

Dr. Melampy is a past recipient of the Gigax Award for Faculty
Scholarship. He is retiring from BW in May 2015.

Calvin A. Smith Botany Prize - The Department of Biology and Geology has established an endowed fund in the name of Calvin A. Smith in recognition of his service as a dedicated teacher and faculty advisor from 1963-1998.  The Calvin A. Smith Botany prize is to be awarded to a biology major who has shown exceptional interest and accomplishment in plant science.  Preference is also expressed for a student with outstanding performance in botany courses, and for a student who has taken course work beyond the introductory level and/or independent study.   For 2015, there was no prize awarded.

John W. Miller Zoology Prize - The Department of Biology & Geology has established an endowed fund in the name of John W. Miller in recognition of his service as a dedicated teacher and faculty advisor from 1963-2001.  The John W. Miller Zoology Prize is to be awarded to a biology major who has shown exceptional interest and accomplishment in zoology.  For 2015, the recipient for this prize is Marissa C. Ganzfried.  This prize was presented at the Annual All Science Department Picnic.

The James M. Ruegsegger Prize is given to honor James Ruegsegger as one of BW's most distinguished graduates.  As a graduate of the class of 1922, he entered the world of medicine with a concern for others that is the hallmark of a BW education.  His effective research on polio, pneumonia, diphtheria, meningitis, and tetanus and his service to country earned him the Alumni Merit Award.  It was Dr. Ruegsegger's decision to return to BW a portion of his resources for this endowment to help future BW biology students.  Preference is made for a senior biology major who has excelled in biology and plans to continue studies in the biological sciences.

The Edward C. & Diane White Scholarship is an endowed fund that supports two separate awards, one of which is offered to outstanding students who will be attending medical school.  

Stephen D. Hilliard Fund for Student Independent Research - Established in 2004 to recognize Dr. Stephen D. Hilliard's service as a dedicated teacher and faculty advisor from 1973-2004.  This fund was created to foster independent research by Biology majors at Baldwin Wallace University.

The Michael Melampy Research and Field Biology Fund - Established in 2015 to recognize Dr. Michael Melampy's service as a dedicated teacher and faculty advisor from 1986-2015.  This fund was created to foster research and field studies by Biology majors at Baldwin Wallace University.

Fauna - A NEW Student Organization at BW!

Fauna is open to any BW student who is interested in animal-related issues, hobbies or careers. Scheduled activities focus on pets, livestock, wildlife and fish & game with the purpose of educating others on the many interactions between humans and animals.
